Several veterans are helping me launch a new organization, "Veterans for Herger," to increase the role local veterans play in my re-election campaign. I would be honored to have you join our distinguished group of local veterans.
First, I want to thank you for your prior service to our nation, but also for your ongoing service as a leader in our local veteran community. As you are well aware, freedom isn't free. It is only through the sacrifice of our current and prior military service men and women that Americans are able to enjoy the freedoms we have today.
As a patriot and a veteran, I think you share my strong concern about the direction our nation is headed under the leadership of the Obama Administration and the Nancy Pelosi-led Congress. But the extreme liberals are not only taking Washington down a discredited and dangerous path; they are making alarming inroads into the Northern California Congressional District I represent.
Liberals were organized and on the move in the 2008 elections. Sadly, too many North State voters believed the glib mantra of "change" without examining what that "change" might really mean - trillions of dollars in new debt; a government takeover of our health care system; record-setting new taxes on families and small businesses; a new national energy tax under the guise of "cap and trade"; and weakening our national security by applying a law enforcement mindset to the terrorists and enemy combatants who want to destroy our nation.
In fact, in 2008 Butte County, one of the two largest counties in our Second Congressional District, cast a majority of votes for both President Obama and my Democrat opponent. Congressman Tom McClintock, the conservative Republican who represents the congressional district to the east of us, spent over $2.5 million against his liberal opponent, Charlie Brown, to win in a district that may be more Republican than ours. That was a wake-up call for every Northern Californian who shares our values and viewpoint on the major issues facing the United States. In other words, there is no such thing as a safe Republican seat in California. Fortunately, our side is pushing back against the liberal assault on our values, our free market system, and the America we know and love.
My goal in creating "Veterans for Herger" is to have a core group of respected local veterans in our congressional district who can help me in what may be an intense political battle in the critically important 2010 election, and thereby help keep our Northern California Congressional District in conservative hands. As you may know, the liberals have already launched attack ads against me because I stood up for a veteran who spoke his mind at one of my town hall meetings last summer.
As a member of Veterans for Herger you would play a vital role in helping me spread the word to voters about what is at stake for our nation in the War on Terror and why a strong national defense is critical to our freedom and prosperity. I envision the group helping disseminate information about my work and that of other conservative Republicans in support of our armed forces and our veterans. Although my record is clear on the issues important to our veteran community, many people are simply unaware. They are busy with their jobs, family, and other obligations. That is understandable. But when you have the opportunity to help explain my record, I hope you will do so. I will also make sure all members of Veterans for Herger have the ammunition they need to make the case for returning a pro-veteran, pro-military Representative to office. In short, the group will help me push back against the anti-military agenda of the Far Left.
Ultimately your level of participation in Veterans for Herger is strictly up to you. There is no cost to be involved (although I would certainly welcome your financial support). Far more important to me than any financial contribution is the value of your good name as a supporter of mine and of my conservative, pro-military record - and, of course, your vote. Your support and endorsement as a well-respected veteran would speak volumes.
